## How does the Chinese calendar work?

Each month starts on the day of a new moon, so a month has 29 or 30 days and the day of the month tells you the moon: 初一 is the new moon and 十五 the full moon. Twelve months make 354 or 355 days, so about every three years a leap month (闰月) is added to keep the year with the seasons. The new year, 春节, falls between 21 January and 20 February.

## What is my Chinese lunar birthday?

Pick the day you were born: the lunar date is your lunar birthday, and the list under it shows the Western day it falls on in the years ahead. Many families, especially older people, still celebrate the lunar birthday.

## What do 农历 and 阳历 mean?

农历 (nónglì), “the farming calendar”, is the lunar calendar, used for festivals, birthdays of older people and lucky days. 阳历 (yánglì) or 公历 (gōnglì) is the Western calendar China uses for everything else.

## How are lunar dates written?

The months are 正月 (the first), 二月 to 十月, then 冬月 and 腊月 for the eleventh and twelfth. The first ten days are 初一 to 初十, then 十一 to 二十, 廿一 to 廿九 (廿 niàn is twenty), and 三十. So the Mid-Autumn Festival is 八月十五 and Chinese New Year’s Eve is the last day of 腊月.

## What are 丙午 and the other year names?

Each year has a two-character name from a cycle of sixty, ten “heavenly stems” (甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸) with twelve “earthly branches” (子 丑 寅 卯 辰 巳 午 未 申 酉 戌 亥), and each branch is one of the twelve zodiac animals: 午 is the Horse.
