## How can I practise Chinese conversation on my own?

Speak both sides of real everyday exchanges out loud, with someone answering. Here your partner says each line in a Mandarin voice and waits for you; you say your line, the page checks every word of it, and the conversation goes on. Eight scenes, from meeting someone to seeing a doctor, at HSK 1 to 3.

## How does it check what I say?

Your browser’s Mandarin speech recognition writes down what it heard, and each word of your line is marked heard or missed. A word said with other characters of the same sound and tones counts, since many Chinese words sound alike. Heard means understood, not perfect: a recogniser fixes small slips from context.

## What if I can’t remember my line?

Choose Read it to see your line in characters with pinyin over every word, or From English to see only what it means and say it from memory. Hear it says your line for you first. Missed words can go to Review in one press, so the ones you stumble on come back.

## Which browsers can listen?

Chrome, Edge and Safari, on a computer or a phone. Firefox has no speech recognition, so there you can hear the scenes but not be checked. Your partner’s voice is your device’s own Mandarin voice.

## Where does my voice go?

To your browser’s speech service: Chrome sends it to Google and Edge to Microsoft to be recognised; Safari uses Apple’s. We receive only the text it heard, to mark the words, and keep nothing.
