## How do you say China in Chinese?

中国 (Zhōngguó), “the middle country”. A Chinese person is 中国人 (Zhōngguórén), and the Chinese language is 中文 (Zhōngwén).

## How do you say your nationality in Chinese?

Add 人 (rén, person) to the country: 美国人 (Měiguórén) is an American, 英国人 (Yīngguórén) a Brit. Say 我是美国人 (I’m American), or 我来自美国 (wǒ láizì Měiguó), “I come from America”.

## How do you ask where someone is from?

你是哪国人？(Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?), “which country’s person are you?” Answer with 我是…人, such as 我是加拿大人 (I’m Canadian).

## Why do so many countries end in 国?

国 (guó) means country. 美国, 英国, 法国 and 德国 are short for longer names that copy the sound: 美利坚 (Měilìjiān, America), 英吉利 (Yīngjílì, England), 法兰西 (Fǎlánxī, France) and 德意志 (Déyìzhì, Deutschland). The rest copy the sound whole, such as 加拿大 (Jiānádà) and 意大利 (Yìdàlì).

## What are the continents in Chinese?

亚洲 (Yàzhōu) Asia, 欧洲 (Ōuzhōu) Europe, 非洲 (Fēizhōu) Africa, 北美洲 (Běi Měizhōu) North America, 南美洲 (Nán Měizhōu) South America, 大洋洲 (Dàyángzhōu) Oceania and 南极洲 (Nánjízhōu) Antarctica. 洲 (zhōu) means continent.
