## How do you say the Great Wall in Chinese?

长城 (chángchéng, the Great Wall), “the long wall”; in full it is 万里长城 (wànlǐ chángchéng), the wall of ten thousand li.

## What is the Forbidden City called in Chinese?

故宫 (gùgōng, the Forbidden City), “the former palace”. Its old name, 紫禁城 (zǐjìnchéng), is the one the English comes from.

## Which are the Five Great Mountains?

五岳 (wǔyuè, the Five Great Mountains): 泰山 (tàishān, Mount Tai) in the east, 华山 (huàshān, Mount Hua) in the west, 衡山 (héngshān) in the south, 恒山 (héngshān) in the north and 嵩山 (sōngshān) in the middle.

## Why is the Yangtze called 长江?

长江 (chángjiāng, Yangtze River) is simply “the long river”, the longest in Asia, and 黄河 (huánghé, Yellow River) is named for the yellow silt it carries.

## What are the major rivers and mountains of China?

The two great rivers are 长江 (chángjiāng, Yangtze River), the Yangtze, and 黄河 (huánghé, Yellow River), the Yellow River, both flowing east from the Tibetan plateau; then 珠江 (zhūjiāng, Pearl River), the Pearl River, in the south, 淮河 (huáihé, Huai River), the line between north and south, and 黑龙江 (hēilóngjiāng, Amur River), the Amur, on the Russian border. The great ranges are 喜马拉雅山 (xǐmǎlāyǎshān, the Himalayas), the Himalayas, with 珠穆朗玛峰 (zhūmùlǎngmǎfēng, Mount Everest), Everest, 昆仑山 (kūnlúnshān, Kunlun Mountains), 天山 (tiānshān, Tianshan Mountains) in Xinjiang and 秦岭 (qínlǐng, Qinling Mountains), which divides north from south. A range is a 山脉 (shānmài, mountain range).
