# Chinese name to pinyin

Type a Chinese name and get it in English letters, the way names are written: 王小明 is Wang Xiaoming.

## In English letters

The name shows here as you type it.

## How names are written

The family name comes first and is written apart; the given name is one word: 王小明 is _Wáng Xiǎomíng_. In English the order is often turned round, _Xiaoming Wang_, and the tone marks are left off. A syllable starting with a, o or e after another takes an apostrophe: _Xiao’e_.

## Family names

Some characters are read another way as a family name: 曾 is _Zēng_, not _céng_; 单 is _Shàn_, 解 _Xiè_, 查 _Zhā_, 仇 _Qiú_. Two-character family names, like 欧阳 and 诸葛, stay together.

## Passports

Chinese passports write the name in capitals with no tones, family name first, and ü after l or n as _YU_: 吕 is _LYU_.
