## More situations

## How do you answer the phone in Chinese?

喂 (wéi), then 你好 (nǐ hǎo). 喂 is said with a rising tone on the phone, and only on the phone: to get someone’s attention in person it can sound rude. To ask who is calling, 请问是哪位？

## How do you say a phone number in Chinese?

Digit by digit, and 1 is said yāo, not yī, so it can’t be heard as 7 (qī): 138 is yāo sān bā. Our number converter says any phone number for you.

## How do I say them right?

Press Play and say each phrase with the voice, slow first, then at normal speed. Each word’s pinyin is above it, its tone marked.

## Can’t hear it?

Play uses your device’s Mandarin voice. Edge, Chrome and Safari have one; a browser with none plays each word in our recorded voice instead.
