# Chinese speaking test

Say real sentences out loud, from HSK 1 up, and find how far up you’re understood.

## How does the speaking test work?

Press Say it and read each sentence aloud. You get two sentences at HSK 1, then two at HSK 2, and so on up. Your browser’s Mandarin speech recognition writes down what it heard, and each word is marked heard or missed. A level passes when 80% of its words were heard; the test stops at the first level that doesn’t pass, and your speaking level is the last one that did. Most people finish in two to four minutes.

## What does my level mean?

That you can say sentences of that HSK level clearly enough to be understood: the sounds, the tones and the flow of the words. It is not a certificate and doesn’t test grammar or what you would say yourself; the HSKK, the HSK’s official speaking exam, does, and our HSKK practice test runs its parts timed.

## Is it the same as the HSKK?

No. The HSKK is an exam with set parts (repeat a sentence, describe a picture, answer questions) at three levels. This test is a quick check of how far up the levels you can speak and be understood, for anyone, exam or not.

## Which browsers can run it?

Chrome, Edge and Safari, on a computer or a phone. Firefox has no speech recognition, so the test can’t listen there.

## Where does my voice go?

To your browser’s speech service: Chrome sends it to Google and Edge to Microsoft to be recognised; Safari uses Apple’s. We receive only the text it heard, to mark the words, and keep nothing.
