The short answer

Black Myth: Wukong (黑神话：悟空, Hēi Shénhuà: Wùkōng) retells Journey to the West (西游记), the 16th-century novel about the Monkey King.1 You play 天命人 (tiānmìngrén), the Destined One, and every chapter's boss is a demon from the novel: 黑熊精, the Black Bear Guai, first, and the Great Sage himself, 齐天大圣, last.2 Learn their names and read their story in easy Chinese first, and the game's Chinese stops being a wall of characters.

## The chapters and their bosses

The game has six chapters, each named in four characters, each with its own place and its own boss.2

| Chapter | Place | Boss | In the novel |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hēixióng Jīng, the Black Bear Guai | Steals the monk's robe at Guanyin Temple |
Huángfēng Dàshèng, the Yellow Wind Sage | Blows a wind that blinds Wukong |
Xiǎo Xītiān, the New West | 黄眉 Huáng Méi, Yellowbrow | Builds a false temple to trap the monk |
Bǎiyǎn Mójūn, the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master | Friend of the spider spirits, with eyes that shoot light |
Hóng Hái'ér, Red Boy | Son of the Bull Demon King, who breathes fire |
Qítiān Dàshèng cánqū, the Great Sage's broken shell | Wukong's own mountain, where he was born |

The names are made of words you can learn: 黑 (black) and 熊 (bear) with 精 (a spirit); 黄 (yellow) and 风 (wind) with 大圣 (great sage); 百 (a hundred) and 眼 (eyes) with 魔君 (demon lord); 红 (red) with 孩儿 (child). 妖怪 (yāoguài), a monster or demon, is the word for all of them.

yāoguài: “A demon lives on this mountain.”

妖yāo怪guài

Noun

monster; demon; goblin
