Read, then pick the answer.

### Part 2 · 62–66

The first paragraph is given. Put the others in order: pick the paragraph for each place. One paragraph is left over.

Answer each question in no more than ten characters.

When I was a child, my grandmother kept a small garden behind her house. Every spring she planted tomatoes, beans and sunflowers, and every summer she gave most of what she grew to the neighbours. I once asked her why she worked so hard for vegetables she did not keep. She smiled and said that a garden is not only for eating; it is a way of staying in touch with the people around you. Years later, after I moved to a big city where I did not know anyone, I started growing herbs on my balcony and sharing them with the family next door. Only then did I really understand what she meant.

High-speed rail has changed the way many people in China travel. Journeys that once took a whole day by train can now be completed in a few hours, and for trips of up to about a thousand kilometres, many travellers now prefer the train to the plane. Stations are usually closer to city centres than airports, security checks are quicker, and passengers can use their phones or work on laptops throughout the journey. The network has also brought new opportunities to smaller cities along the lines, as tourists and businesses find them easier to reach. At the same time, building and running such a large network costs a great deal, and some experts argue that new lines should be planned carefully according to real demand.

A growing number of Chinese museums now open in the evening. Visitors can join guided tours, listen to talks by experts, or simply enjoy the exhibitions in a quieter atmosphere. Museum staff say that evening opening attracts many young people who are busy at work during the day. Some museums have also designed creative products based on their collections, such as notebooks, bags and even ice cream, which have become very popular online. Experts believe that these changes help bring history closer to everyday life.

2. 86

Tea is one of the most important drinks in Chinese culture. According to legend, people in China began drinking tea more than four thousand years ago. Over time, tea spread along trade routes to Central Asia, Europe and many other parts of the world. Today, China grows more tea than any other country, and its many varieties, such as green tea, black tea and oolong, are enjoyed by people everywhere. For many Chinese people, making tea for a guest is still a simple but meaningful way to show respect.

## Is this the real HSK 7–9 format?

Yes. It follows the HSK 7–9 sample paper that Chinese Testing International published for the new HSK (HSK 3.0), first sat worldwide on 13 December 2026: the same listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking sections, the same parts and question types, 91 questions and the same minutes for each section. The questions are our own, written with the words of the HSK 7–9 list in the 2025 syllabus.

## How is it scored?

The way the HSK scores: each section out of 100, every question in it worth the same, so the paper is out of 500. HSK 7–9 is one exam whose score places you at level 7, 8 or 9; Chinese Testing International hasn’t published those cut-offs yet, so the page shows 300 of 500 (60%) as the pass line, as at the other levels.

## Are these past HSK papers?

No. Past papers belong to Chinese Testing International, and only a few are free. This is an original paper in the same format, so you can sit a whole exam and see your score, and there are 2 different papers at this level to sit. The official sample paper is free on chinesetest.cn.

## How does the listening work?

As in the exam: each recording is played once, then the next one starts, and you answer while it plays. It uses your device’s Mandarin voice; Chrome, Edge and Safari have one. With none, the page shows the words instead.

## How do the speaking questions work?

Press a question’s button, listen when there is something to hear, then answer aloud before its time runs out. If you allow the microphone, your browser records each answer so you can hear it back and mark it against a model answer at the end; the recordings never leave your device.

## Official sample papers

Chinese Testing International’s own HSK 3.0 sample papers, with their recordings and answers, are free from [chinesetest.cn](https://www.chinesetest.cn/notice).
