# Tone sandhi checker

Paste Mandarin and see every tone that changes when it’s said: 你好 is ní hǎo, 一个 yí gè and 不是 bú shì.

## Third tones

A third tone before another third tone is said as a second tone: 你好 _nǐ hǎo_ is said _ní hǎo_, and 水果 _shuǐguǒ_ is said _shuíguǒ_. Hear it on the [third tone pair](https://mandarinthewild.com/tone-pairs/3-3).

## 一 and 不

一 _yī_ is said _yí_ before a fourth tone (一个 _yí gè_) and _yì_ before the other tones (一起 _yìqǐ_), but stays _yī_ when counting or at the end. 不 _bù_ is said _bú_ before a fourth tone: 不是 _bú shì_.

## Between words

When two words that each end and start on a third tone are said together, as in 很好, the first usually rises too: _hén hǎo_. That depends on how the sentence is phrased, so these are listed apart, as often said.
