How long does it take to learn Chinese?

About 2,200 hours to work in it. Far less to read your first stories, if you read the right text.

We make Mandarin The Wild.

The official figure

The Foreign Service Institute trains US diplomats. It puts Mandarin in its hardest group, with Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese and Korean, and plans 88 weeks of full-time study, about 2,200 class hours, to reach professional working level. Spanish and French take 24 to 30 weeks. U.S. Department of State: Foreign Service Institute language learning timelines.

At an hour a day, 2,200 hours is about six years. That is the time to work in Chinese, not the time to start enjoying it.

What the HSK levels ask

The HSK exam counts progress in words. Its 2025 syllabus asks for 300 words at level 1, 1,000 by level 3, 2,000 by level 4, 5,400 by level 6 and about 10,900 by level 9. HSK: the official site of the Chinese Proficiency Test.

time (a point in time or an amount of time)

Also written 時間

Learning a word takes more than one meeting. In one study, learners met new words 1, 3, 7 or 10 times in sentences, and what they knew about each word grew with every step, most at ten. Webb (2007), The effects of repetition on vocabulary knowledge, Applied Linguistics 28(1).

How long the words take on the open web

We counted how much ordinary Chinese web text you would have to read to meet each level's new words ten times. FineWeb-2, the web text we counted (its Mandarin part, cmn_Hani). The hours assume a slow learner's pace of 100 words a minute.

Common words come fast. The rest are spread thin: a typical HSK 6 word turns up about twice in 100,000 words of web text, so meeting it ten times means about 88 hours of reading, while learning hundreds of others.

Graded reading is faster

A story written for your level repeats that level's words. We counted every story in our Library with the reading our word cards use, and compared how often a level's new words come up there and on the web.

Story levelStoriesTypical new word, times per 10,000 words in our storiesOn the web

HSK 2684.21.3
HSK 3542.60.9
HSK 4441.50.7

In our HSK 1 stories a typical HSK 1 word comes up more than five times as often as on the web, so ten meetings take about an hour and a half of reading, not eight. The gap narrows at higher levels, where there are many more words to repeat. There, reviewing the words you save closes the rest.

A plan that fits the numbers

  • Learn the sounds first. The pinyin chart plays every syllable in all four tones.
  • Read at your level, every day. The Library has free graded stories from HSK 1, with recordings, so you meet your level's words again and again.
  • Review what you save. A word you keep comes back in Review before you forget it, so you need fewer chance meetings in reading.
  • Move to real text when stories feel easy. On a real page, point at a word to see what it means in that sentence. See the extension.

How we counted

Web frequencies are our engine's counts of the Mandarin part of FineWeb-2, a large collection of web pages. FineWeb-2, the web text we counted (its Mandarin part, cmn_Hani). A level's new words are the ones the 2025 HSK list adds at that level. Story counts cover every Library story with an HSK level, each cut into words as our reader shows it. Only words that appear at least once are in the story column. Reading pace is an assumption, so halve the hours if you read twice as fast.

Questions

How many hours does it take to learn Chinese?

The US Foreign Service Institute plans about 2,200 class hours for an English speaker to reach working level. Simple stories and everyday talk come much sooner.

How long does it take to reach HSK 4?

HSK 4 asks for 2,000 words. On ordinary web text, meeting a typical HSK 4 word ten times takes about 29 hours of reading; stories at your level and review of the words you save cut that a lot.

Can I learn Chinese in a year?

You can learn to read simple stories and talk about everyday things in a year of daily study. Working-level Chinese takes several years at that pace.
