What is the TOCFL?
The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL, 華語文能力測驗) is Taiwan’s Mandarin proficiency test, run by SC-TOP for the Ministry of Education. It has three bands, A, B and C, each with two levels, and is often needed for Taiwan scholarships, university places and jobs. The listening and reading tests are multiple choice.
What is on this practice test?
Sixteen questions at Band A (levels 1 and 2): eight listening and eight reading, drawn from 20 for this band, so each try is different. Everything is in traditional characters with Taiwan’s everyday words, and questions and answers are in Chinese, as on the exam; hover or tap any word for its pinyin and meaning.
How is it scored?
You see the share you got right and each part’s count, then every question with the right answer and its English. The TOCFL turns answers into scaled scores with cut-offs for each level, so this share is a guide to your band, not a TOCFL score.
How does listening work?
Each recording plays on its own once, and you may play it once more, in your device’s Mandarin voice, a Taiwan voice when the device has one (most phones and Edge do), with a second voice for the other speaker.
Is this an official TOCFL test?
No. Every question is our own, written in the style of the TOCFL at this band; people and places in them are invented. Not affiliated with SC-TOP or Taiwan’s Ministry of Education.
