About

Made by a Mandarin teacher, for the Chinese you actually meet

Textbooks teach a tidy Chinese. The Chinese in videos, comments and the news moves faster. Mandarin The Wild explains it in its own sentence, right where you meet it, so you keep reading instead of looking things up.

What it does

Point at any Chinese word on a web page or in YouTube subtitles and a small card shows what it means in that sentence, with its pinyin. Keep the words you want, and Review brings them back just before you’d forget. The Library has graded stories and articles from HSK 1 to 6, each read aloud. For learners from high beginner to intermediate, and for their teachers.

What we promise

  • Free to look up and read. Pointing at words, the Library and every tool on this site are free, with no account.
  • No ads, and we never sell your data. No advertising or tracking scripts. The extension talks only to mandarinthewild.com.
  • Your words are yours. Download every word you’ve kept, or delete your account and everything in it, at any time.
  • Honest when it’s unsure. When a word could mean more than one thing, the card shows the options. When it can’t tell, it says so instead of guessing.

The details are in our privacy page and terms.

Who we are

Mandarin The Wild, LLC is a small, independent company in the United States, built for learners and not for advertisers. Dictionary meanings are adapted from CC-CEDICT; every lookup is read in its sentence by our own reader of Chinese.
