Chinese dictation practice

Hear a real sentence from a native narrator, type what you heard, and see every word marked.

Sentence 1 of 10

What is Chinese dictation practice?

You hear a sentence and write down what you heard. It trains your ear to split speech into words, which is the hardest part of understanding spoken Mandarin. Here each sentence comes from one of our graded readings, read by a native narrator.

Can I type pinyin instead of characters?

Yes. Type the characters, or the pinyin with or without tones (wo3 or wǒ or wo). Each word is marked right when you have its characters, or its sounds in pinyin.

Which level should I pick?

Start one level below your reading level: listening is harder than reading. Seven or more of ten words right in a sentence means you heard it; go up a level when most sentences are.

Where is the audio from?

Every sentence is a line from a Library reading, cut from its narrator’s recording. Open the reading to hear the whole story.
