How Chinese numbers work
Say the digit, then its place: 三十五 sān shí wǔ is “three ten five”, 三百零五 sān bǎi líng wǔ is “three hundred, zero, five”. Ten to nineteen start with 十 alone (十五 shí wǔ), but inside a bigger number it’s 一十 (一百一十 yī bǎi yī shí).
万 and 亿: counting in ten thousands
Chinese groups digits in fours, not threes. 万 is ten thousand and 亿 is a hundred million, so a million is “a hundred 万”.
| 10,000 | 一万 yī wàn |
|---|---|
| 100,000 | 十万 shí wàn |
| 1 million | 一百万 yī bǎi wàn |
| 10 million | 一千万 yī qiān wàn |
| 100 million | 一亿 yī yì |
| 1 billion | 十亿 shí yì |
二 or 两
Both mean two. Count and read digits with 二 (二 èr, 十二 shí èr, 二十二 èr shí èr). Before 千, 万 and 亿, and at the front of 百, say 两: 两百 liǎng bǎi, 两千 liǎng qiān, 两万 liǎng wàn. Before a measure word it’s always 两: 两个人, two people. 二百 is fine too.
零 in the middle
A gap of zeros inside a number is one 零, however many zeros there are: 一千零五 yī qiān líng wǔ, 一万零五十 yī wàn líng wǔ shí. Zeros at the end are never said: 一千五百 yī qiān wǔ bǎi.
1.2万 on Chinese sites
Prices, views and followers are often written with a digit and 万 or 亿: 1.2万 is 12,000 and 3.5亿 is 350,000,000. In speech people shorten the same way: 一万二 is 12,000 and 三千五 is 3,500. Type either into the box to check.
Money
Prices are written with 元 and said with 块: 十二块五 shí èr kuài wǔ is ¥12.50, and the last unit is usually dropped. Ten cents is a 毛 (written 角): 五毛 wǔ máo.
Phone numbers and years
Both go digit by digit. In a phone number 1 is usually 幺 yāo: 110 is 幺幺零 yāo yāo líng. A year: 二〇二六年 èr líng èr liù nián.
Percentages and fractions
Say the whole first, then the part: 百分之五十 bǎi fēn zhī wǔ shí is 50%, 三分之一 sān fēn zhī yī is 1/3. A decimal point is 点: 三点一四 sān diǎn yī sì.
On cheques and contracts
Banks and contracts write the formal capitals so a number can’t be changed: 壹贰叁肆伍陆柒捌玖拾佰仟. 一万两千三百零五 yī wàn liǎng qiān sān bǎi líng wǔ becomes 壹万贰仟叁佰零伍.
How 一 is said
The pinyin here is written as a dictionary writes it. In speech 一 changes tone before another syllable: 一百 is said yìbǎi and 一万 yíwàn, but it stays yī when counting and at the end of a number.
