What is the YCT?

The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) is the international Chinese test for school students whose first language isn’t Chinese, from the same body as the HSK. It has four written levels, YCT 1 to 4, each a listening and a reading paper (with writing from level 3), and a separate speaking test.

What is on this practice test?

Sixteen questions at YCT 1: eight listening and eight reading, drawn from 20 for this level, so each try is different. Chinese comes with its pinyin. Where the exam shows pictures to choose from, the choices here are in English.

How is it scored?

You see the share you got right, each part’s count, then every question with the right answer and its English. The YCT pass mark is 60% of the total.

How does listening work?

Each recording plays on its own once and you may play it once more, in your device’s Mandarin voice, a second voice for the other speaker. Chrome, Edge and Safari have Mandarin voices.

Is this an official YCT?

No. Every question is our own, written at the level of YCT 1’s words; people in them are invented. Not affiliated with the Center for Language Education and Cooperation or Chinese Test International.
