Chinese shadowing
Hear a native narrator say a sentence, say it back, and see your pitch over theirs.
Press Play, then Hold to say.
Your voice stays on this device. Nothing is recorded or sent.
What is shadowing in Chinese?
Shadowing is saying a sentence back the moment you hear it, copying the speaker’s rhythm and melody as closely as you can. It trains your tones in whole sentences, where they matter, instead of word by word.
How do I shadow with this page?
Play the sentence, then hold Hold to say and say it back, as close to the narrator as you can. Your pitch is drawn over theirs, syllable by syllable. Play yours to hear yourself next to the narrator, then try again until your line rises and falls where theirs does.
Why won’t my line match exactly?
Every voice is different: a deep voice and a high one move by different amounts. Both lines are drawn from each voice’s own middle, so what to match is the shape: where it rises, falls, dips low or stays high.
Is my voice recorded or sent?
No. The microphone opens when you first press Hold to say. Your pitch is measured in this browser, Play yours plays it from this page’s memory, and nothing is kept or sent. It is gone when you leave the page.
Keys
Space plays the sentence, hold S to say it, N for the next sentence.
