Chinese pronunciation checker

Say a real Mandarin sentence and see which words were understood.

How does the pronunciation checker work?

Press Say it and read the sentence aloud. Your browser’s Mandarin speech recognition writes down what it heard, and each word of the sentence is marked: heard, or missed. A word heard with other characters of the same sound and tones counts, since many Chinese words sound alike. Heard means understood, not perfect: a recognizer uses the words around it and can forgive a small tone slip.

What does a missed word mean?

The recognizer didn’t hear that word in what you said. Often its tones or a sound in it (zh and z, an and ang) were off. Play the narrator, say the word slowly, then the sentence again. For tones one word at a time, use tone practice, which draws your pitch.

Which browsers can check pronunciation?

Chrome, Edge and Safari, on a computer or a phone. Firefox has no speech recognition, so the checker can’t listen there.

Where does my voice go?

To your browser’s speech service: Chrome sends it to Google and Edge to Microsoft to be recognised; Safari uses Apple’s. We receive only the text it heard, to mark the words, and keep nothing.
