How to learn Chinese from songs

Pick songs you love, read the lyrics with every word explained, play them again and again, and sing along.

We make Mandarin The Wild.

What the studies found

People learn words from songs, and more with each listen. Learners who heard a song one, three or five times picked up words from it, gained more the more often they heard it, and learned more of the words the song repeated. Pavia, Webb and Faez (2019), Incidental vocabulary learning through listening to songs, Studies in Second Language Acquisition 41(4).

Singing helps memory. Adults who learned short phrases in an unknown language by singing them recalled and said more of them afterwards than those who spoke them, or spoke them in rhythm. Ludke, Ferreira and Overy (2014), Singing can facilitate foreign language learning, Memory & Cognition 42(1).

In English, chart songs ask little: the 3,000 most common word families plus names covered about 95% of their words, a load close to everyday speech. Tegge (2017), The lexical coverage of popular songs in English language teaching, System 67. Chinese songs turned out differently.

How much of a Chinese song do HSK words cover?

We took the 300 newest songs on a Chinese lyrics site in October 2026, 89,000 words in all, left out credits and rights notices, and checked each song's words against the 2025 HSK list. Kugeci: Chinese song lyrics, newest songs. HSK: the official site of the Chinese Proficiency Test.

HSK words you knowShare of a song's words (median)Middle half of songs
HSK 141%34–48%
HSK 1–250%42–57%
HSK 1–360%52–68%
HSK 1–472%63–78%
HSK 1–579%72–85%
HSK 1–686%79–90%

That is harder than Chinese TV, where HSK 1–4 words are 79% of a title, or Chinese podcasts at 81% (how we counted those). Songs use fewer everyday words and more words for feelings and images.

The words Chinese songs lean on

Beyond HSK 4, the words in the most songs are the words of love songs: 沉默 (silence, in 12% of songs), 眼泪 (tears, 12%), 遗憾 (regret, 10%), 思念 (to miss someone, 9%), 拥抱 (to hug, 9%), 温柔 (gentle, 8%), 寂寞 (lonely, 8%) and 月光 (moonlight, 7%). Learn a handful of these and the next song is much easier.

Songs repeat themselves

A typical song is short, 272 words with 121 different ones, and it repeats: 28% of a song's lines are a line it already sang, and 32% of its words above HSK 4 come back at least twice in the same song. Every chorus is another look at the same words, which is how songs teach.

A plan that fits the evidence

  • Pick songs you love. You will play them many times, and each listen adds words.
  • Read the lyrics first. Paste them into the Reader, or point at them on a lyrics page with Mandarin The Wild, to see each word's pinyin and meaning.
  • Learn the feeling words. 沉默, 眼泪, 遗憾, 思念 and 温柔 are in song after song.
  • Sing along. Singing a phrase helps you remember it word for word.
  • Save the words that keep coming back to your Backpack and review them.

How we counted

The lyrics are the 300 newest songs on kugeci.com in October 2026 with at least 60 Chinese words and mostly Chinese characters, read from each song's timed lyrics. Kugeci: Chinese song lyrics, newest songs. Lines with a colon (credits) and rights notices are left out. Words are cut by our engine and levelled on the 2025 HSK list the way the Library levels a story; names the dictionary only knows as names are left out. A repeated line is a line identical to an earlier one in the same song. "Middle half" is the 25th to 75th percentile of songs.

Questions

Can you learn Chinese from songs?

Yes. Studies find people pick up words from songs, more with each listen, and singing phrases helps you remember them. Read the lyrics with each word explained and play the song many times.

Are Chinese songs hard to understand?

Harder than Chinese TV. In our count of 300 new Chinese songs, HSK 1–4 words are 72% of a typical song's words, against 79% of a Chinese film or show, because lyrics use many words for feelings that HSK teaches late.

Which words come up most in Chinese songs?

Beyond HSK 4, words of love songs: 沉默, 眼泪, 遗憾, 思念, 拥抱, 温柔, 寂寞 and 月光 each appear in 7–12% of songs.
