What it counts
Chinese characters are the Han characters alone, the count most translation prices use. Characters counts every one, punctuation and spaces included, and Punctuation the marks among them. Words are counted as a reader reads them, so 研究生命起源 is three words, and Different counts each word once.
Words in context
Chinese has no spaces, so a word ends where the sentence says it does. A splitter that takes the longest dictionary word first reads 研究生命起源 as 研究生 命 起源 (“graduate student, life, origin”) and 结婚的和尚未结婚的 with a monk (和尚) in it. This one reads the whole sentence, the same way our reader and extension do: 研究 生命 起源, “study the origin of life”, and 结婚 的 和 尚未 结婚 的.
