Chinese conjunctions
The words that join words and sentences, most common first.
And, or, but
Because, so and then
If and unless
Although and even if
How do you say “and” in Chinese?
和 and 跟 join nouns only: 我和你 (you and me). They don’t join two actions or sentences: for “and then” use 然后, for “and also” 而且, and often nothing at all: 我吃饭,看电视 (I eat and watch TV).
Do Chinese conjunctions come in pairs?
Often. Both halves are said: 因为…所以 (because … so), 虽然…但是 (although … but), 如果…就 (if … then), 不但…而且 (not only … but also). 虽然下雨,但是我们去了 is “although it rained, we went”.
Where do conjunctions go in a Chinese sentence?
At the start of their part of the sentence, like in English, or right after its subject: 我因为下雨没去 (I didn’t go because it rained). The reason usually comes first, then the result.
