What is a Chinese spelling test?
In Chinese schools it’s 听写 (tīngxiě), “listen and write”: the teacher says a word and you write it in characters. It checks that you can write a word from its sound, not only read it, and it’s how Chinese children learn every new word.
How do I give it to a class?
Print gives the answer sheet, one numbered row of boxes a word, and the key with pinyin and English on the next page. Press Start the test and Next word to play each word to the room in a native voice, or read them yourself from the key.
Can I answer in pinyin?
Yes, tones optional (ni3 hao3, nǐ hǎo or ni hao). A word is right when its characters or its sounds are; write characters when you can, since writing them is what the test trains.
Which words are in it?
HSK 7–9 words of one to four characters from the 2025 HSK syllabus, 10 a test in pinyin order: 549 tests take you through every one.
