The best Chinese novels for learners, ranked by how much you understand
Pick a book you follow most of, read its free opening with every word explained, and stay with it.
We make Mandarin The Wild.
How we ranked them
We read the free opening chapters, 1 to 3, of 32 of the most famous Chinese novels on QQ Reading, where they are published, and checked each word against the 2025 HSK list.12. A book ranks higher the more of its words are HSK 1–4. Names are left out, and a book had to be under its real author's name, so copies by someone else were dropped.
Reading on your own takes knowing about 98% of a story's words.34. No novel comes near that on HSK words alone, so the list tells you which book needs the least help, not which needs none.

How to read one
- Know about HSK 4 first. Below that, nearly a third of even the easiest book is new. Graded stories in the Library get you there, and the level test shows where you are.
- Pick one near the top whose story you want. You learn from what you finish, and a book you care about gets finished.
- Read with every word explained. Open the book's page on QQ Reading and point at any word with Mandarin The Wild to see its pinyin and its meaning in that sentence, or paste a chapter into the Reader.
- Stay with one book. Its people, places and way of telling come back, so each chapter is easier than the last. Our guide to learning from novels has the counts.
- Keep the words that come back. Save them to your Backpack and meet them again in Review.
