Is Chinese hard to learn?

Hard to hear and hard to read at first, easy to build on. The hard parts are front-loaded.

The official answer

The Foreign Service Institute trains US diplomats. It puts Mandarin in its hardest group, with Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese and Korean, and plans 88 weeks of full-time study, about 2,200 class hours, to reach professional working level. Spanish and French take 24 to 30 weeks.1 How long Chinese takes turns that into time per HSK level.

That figure is about working in Chinese as a diplomat. Where the hours go matters more to a learner, because Chinese is not hard everywhere.

What is hard: the tones

Every syllable has a pitch shape, and the shape changes the word: mǎi is “buy”, mài is “sell”. A study of how much work each sound contrast does in Mandarin found that a syllable's tone matters as much as its vowel.2 English uses pitch for feeling, not meaning, so an English ear has to learn to hear it.

It is learnable. American learners who practised telling the four tones apart in eight sessions over two weeks were 21% more accurate, on new words and new voices too, and kept most of the gain six months later.3 Their own spoken tones got easier for native speakers to identify too.4 Why Chinese tones are hard has the rest.

What is hard: the characters

There is no alphabet. A character shows its meaning and sound only by hints, so each one is learned as a shape with a sound and a meaning, and China's list of standard characters has 8,105.5 Nothing carries over from English either: almost no Chinese word looks or sounds like its English one.

What is easy: the grammar

A Chinese verb has one form. 去 (qù) is “go”, “goes”, “went” and “gone”; time is said once, with a word like 昨天 (yesterday) or 了, not on every verb. Nouns have no plural ending and no gender, and there are no words for “a” and “the”. Word order is mostly the same as English: 我喜欢茶, “I like tea”. Chinese sentence structure covers what does differ, such as where time and place go.

What is easy: words build on characters

Characters are not one-off costs. Most words are two characters, and the same characters turn up again and again: 人 (person) is in 147 of the 10,000 commonest words, 大 (big) in 117 and 生 (life, to be born) in 68. We counted how far a learner's characters carry, learning them commonest first:

Characters you knowOf the 1,000 commonest words, you can writeOf the 5,000 commonestOf the words on a page
25045%23%47%
50073%45%63%
1,00096%74%81%
2,000100%96%93%
3,000100%100%98%

So the characters are front-loaded. The first 1,000 are slow, but by then nearly every common word is written with characters you know, and a new word is two familiar shapes in a new pair: 电 (electric) and 脑 (brain) make 电脑, “computer”. Knowing the characters isn't knowing the word, as 东西 (“stuff”, not “east west”) shows, but it means you can read it, say it and remember it.

So how hard is it?

  • The start is the hard part. Tones and the first 1,000 characters take the most work per word; after that each new word costs less.
  • Train your ear early. Tone accuracy rises with short, focused listening practice, and it carries over to speaking.
  • Learn characters inside words. A character met in five words is learned once and reinforced five times.
  • Don't wait for the grammar. It won't stop you: read and listen from the start. In the Library, and on any web page with Mandarin The Wild, every word explains itself, characters and tones included, and the words you save come back in Review.

How we counted

Characters and words are ranked by how often they appear in our language pack's word counts: the Mandarin part of FineWeb-2 and the training part of our text supply (subtitles, chat, posts, stories and news we collect to test our reader), cut into words by the engine behind our word cards.6 A character's share is the share of every word it appears in. A word counts as written with the characters you know when all its characters are among them. Only words written entirely in Chinese characters count.

Questions

Is Chinese hard to learn for English speakers?

Yes: the Foreign Service Institute puts Mandarin in its hardest group, at about 2,200 class hours. The hard parts are the tones and the characters; the grammar is simpler than English, with one form for every verb.

What is the hardest part of learning Chinese?

For most learners, the tones and the first thousand characters. Both are hardest at the start: tone hearing improves quickly with practice, and the 1,000 commonest characters already write 96% of the 1,000 commonest words.

Is Chinese grammar hard?

No. Verbs never change form, nouns have no plurals or gender, there are no articles, and the basic word order is the same as English.

How many characters do you need to read Chinese?

In our count, the 1,000 commonest characters write 81% of the words on a page and 2,000 write 93%. China’s standard list has 8,105.
