English (for the teacher)
The United Nations has a special kind of soldier. They go to places that have been through war and help the people there get back to a safe life. They wear blue helmets, so people call them “blue helmets”; their formal name is “peacekeepers”.
China began taking part in this work in 1990. That year China sent five military officers to the Middle East to observe and report. In 1992 China sent a whole unit for the first time, to Cambodia, and its main job was repairing roads and bridges.
To date, China has made more than fifty thousand peacekeeper deployments in all. Among the five permanent members of the Security Council, China currently has the most peacekeepers on missions. This work costs a lot of money, and China is second in what it pays.
What exactly do they do? In South Sudan and Lebanon, Chinese soldiers build roads and clear landmines, doctors treat local people, and other soldiers protect local people and patrol the streets.
This job is not safe. In more than thirty years, Chinese peacekeepers have lost their lives on missions.
Does your country send people to do this work too?
