Chinese culture for kids

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

Hello! My name is Zhu Xinxin, I'm eight this year, and I'm a primary school pupil in China. Let me tell you about two days Chinese kids love.

The first day is the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year. At the Spring Festival we wear new clothes, eat dumplings and watch TV with our family. Our relatives also give kids red envelopes, and inside the red envelopes is money!

The second day is the first of June: Children's Day. On this day we don't have lessons! We sing, watch films and eat yummy things, and everyone is really happy.

So what about the money in the red envelopes?

Every Spring Festival, Mum says, “Give the red envelopes to Mum, and Mum will keep them safe for you.”

My red envelopes from when I was five, six, seven and eight are all at Mum's.

Mum says, “When you go to university, Mum will give it all to you.”

When I go to university, I'll be eighteen. That's ten more years!

Children's Day is the best: no lessons, and no red envelopes to hand over to Mum.
