Shopping in Chinese at the corner shop

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

I run the little shop on the corner. I remember what everyone wants. Before you’ve said a word, I have it ready.

At seven in the morning, a schoolboy comes in. I hand him a bread roll.

At six in the evening, an old man comes in. I hand him a bottle of milk.

It’s the same every day. The schoolboy asks me, “How do you know what I want?” I smile. “I watch every day, so I remember.”

Then one evening at six, the old man comes in. Straight away, I pick up a bottle of milk.

“No milk today,” he says. “I’d like a cake.”

I look at him. He lives on his own. What does he want a cake for? Is it his birthday today? Is he spending his birthday alone?

I say nothing and pick out the biggest cake.

“This one’s on me. Happy birthday, Grandpa!”

He smiles. “Thank you! But it isn’t my birthday.”

“Then whose birthday is it?”

“My cat’s. She’s three today!”
