玲玲今年六岁。新年的早上，她坐在桌子前，很认真。
“玲玲，快来吃早饭！”我叫她。
“马上来！我在画我们的家。妈妈，现在不能看！”
过了一会儿，她问我：“妈妈，太阳是什么颜色的？”
“你说呢？”
玲玲说：“红色的！”她画了一个很大的太阳。下边有很多树，都是绿色的。
树下边是爸爸、我和她，三个人都在笑。爸爸最高，我第二，玲玲最小。我们的头发都是黑色的。
“玲玲，我们的衣服怎么都是红的？”我问。
“妈妈，新年要穿红衣服！”
她说对了。在中国，红色是高兴的颜色。新年的时候，很多人穿新衣服，很多家的门上都有红纸。
“那我们家的狗呢？”我在纸上找了一下，没有。爸爸也来看，他也没找到。
玲玲笑了：“妈妈，在这儿呢！我们家的狗是白的！”

Lingling is six. On New Year’s morning she sits at the table, concentrating hard.
“Lingling, come and have breakfast!” I call her.
“Coming! I’m painting our home. Mum, you can’t look yet!”
A little later she asks me, “Mum, what colour is the sun?”
“What do you think?”
Lingling says, “Red!” She paints a big sun. Below it are lots of trees, all green.
Under the trees are Dad, Lingling and me, all three of us smiling. Dad is the tallest, I’m second, and Lingling is the smallest. We all have black hair.
“Lingling, why are all our clothes red?” I ask.
“Mum, you wear red at New Year!”
She’s right. In China, red is the colour of happy days. At New Year, lots of people wear new clothes, and lots of homes have red paper on their doors.
“So where’s our dog?” I look for it on the paper. It’s not there. Dad comes to look too. He can’t find it either.
Lingling laughs: “Mum, it’s here! Our dog is white!”
