Freed from the Mountain
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
The Tang Monk jumped with fright. In the last few days he had already met with many frightening things: the two men travelling with him had both been eaten by demons in the mountains. Luckily, someone had saved him. This man was called Liu Boqin, and he had brought the Tang Monk all the way here.
Liu Boqin said: "Don't be afraid. This mountain is called Five-Element Mountain. They say that five hundred years ago a talking monkey was pinned under it. That must be who's calling you."
They walked over and looked: at the foot of the mountain there was a monkey's head. Grass grew all over his head, and his face was covered in dirt. He could move both hands, but his body couldn't get out.
Sun Wukong said: "Master, what took you so long? Guanyin told me to wait for you here. Let me out, and I'll follow you to the Western Paradise!" The Tang Monk asked: "I have no knife and nothing else. How can I get you out?" Sun Wukong said: "On top of the mountain there's a sheet of paper from the Buddha, with six golden characters written on it. Take the paper down, and I'll be able to get out."
The Tang Monk climbed the mountain, and at the very top he really did see the paper. He bowed and said: "If he truly is my disciple, let me take this paper down." He pulled it gently and the paper came away; the wind blew, and the paper flew off.
Sun Wukong shouted: "Master, go a little way off. I'm coming out!" The Tang Monk and Liu Boqin walked a long way to the east. There was a great crash, the mountain split open, and rocks flew far and wide. Sun Wukong leapt out and knelt before the Tang Monk: "Master!"
The Tang Monk asked him: "What is your name?" He said: "My name is Sun Wukong." The Tang Monk smiled: "A good name! Let me give you another name as well: Sun the Pilgrim. All right?" Sun Wukong said: "Yes! Yes!" When Liu Boqin saw that the Tang Monk had a disciple, he said goodbye to them and went home.
The two of them headed west. They hadn't gone far when a big tiger jumped out by the road. The Tang Monk was so frightened he couldn't speak. But Sun Wukong was delighted: "Don't be afraid, he's come to bring me some clothes!"
He took a tiny needle out of his ear; the wind blew on it, and it grew big and long. The Tang Monk stared without moving. So this was Sun Wukong's golden-hooped staff! Sun Wukong picked it up and killed the tiger with one blow.
He turned one of his hairs into a knife, took off the tiger's skin, made it into a skirt and put it on. That night they stayed at an old man's house. When the old man saw what Sun Wukong looked like, he was frightened and wanted to shut the door. The Tang Monk said: "Don't be afraid, he's my disciple." Sun Wukong asked the Tang Monk for a needle and some thread, and made the skirt even better. The Tang Monk also gave him one of his own white robes.
The Tang Monk watched him, very happy inside: "With this disciple, I'm not afraid of the road to the Western Paradise!"
But the next morning, just as they walked into a wood, six men with knives jumped out...
