English (for the teacher)
Tomorrow I have my first Chinese class. The teacher will say, "Everyone, please tell us who you are." I wrote a few sentences in my notebook:
"My name is Fang Liang. I'm British. I'm twenty this year. I'm a student. I live in Beijing. Nice to meet you!"
I said it once, twice, ten times. At night, as I went to sleep, I was still saying, "My name is Fang Liang, my name is Fang Liang..."
The next day, I got to school very early. There was a woman in the classroom, sitting there reading a book.
I thought, "She's a new classmate too, right?" I sat down next to her and said, "Hello!"
She glanced at me: "Hello."
Happily, I said, "My name is Fang Liang. I'm British. I'm twenty this year. I'm a student. I live in Beijing. Nice to meet you! And you?"
She smiled and said nothing.
At eight, the other students all arrived. She stood up, walked to the front and said, "Hello, everyone, I'm your Chinese teacher. My surname is Song."
I looked at her and didn't know what to say.
Ms Song said, "Today we're learning how to say who we are. Who wants to go first?"
I said nothing.
Ms Song looked at me and smiled: "I already know Fang Liang. He's British, he's twenty this year, he's a student and he lives in Beijing. I know it all already!"
The whole class laughed. I laughed too: "Ms Song, nice to meet you!"
