In China, when you make a phone call, you say "喂".
Mr Xie's mum turns seventy tomorrow. He wants to treat the family to a meal out.
He phones the restaurant.
"Hello? Good day!"
"Hello!" "I'd like to book a table." "Do you have one tomorrow at lunchtime?"
"Yes." "For how many?"
"Five people."
"What time will you come?"
"Twelve o'clock."
"All right." "May I have your surname?"
Mr Xie said: "Xie."
"You're welcome!"
Mr Xie laughed: "No, no!" "I'm Mr Xie: Xie as in xiexie, thank you."
"Sorry, Mr Xie!" "Tomorrow at twelve noon, five people, no problem."
"Thank you!"
"You're welcome!" "See you tomorrow!"
At noon the next day, Mr Xie and his family got there. A waitress asked: "How many?"
"Five people." "I'm…"
She said: "Mr Xie, as in thank you, right?" "This way, please!"
