English (for the teacher)
On Friday afternoon, the little boy comes home very happy: “Mum, I’ve got a girlfriend!”
Mum looks at him: “A girlfriend? How old are you?”
“Six. Her name is Yao Guo’er, she’s in my class. She’s a girl and she’s my friend, so she’s my girlfriend!”
Mum laughs: “No, no. She’s your friend, your good friend.”
“So what’s a girlfriend?”
“A girlfriend and a boyfriend are two people: he loves her, and she loves him too. When we were at university, your dad was my boyfriend.”
The boy thinks for a moment: “What about 小朋友? Is that a very small friend?”
“No. 小朋友 means a child. You’re a 小朋友, and Yao Guo’er is a 小朋友 too.”
“I get it! Yao Guo’er is my good friend, and we’re both little kids.”
Mum is very pleased.
Then the boy says: “Mum, I love Miss Pan. Miss Pan is my girlfriend!”
“Miss Pan already has a boyfriend.”
The boy thinks for a moment: “Never mind. Then my girlfriend is Yao Guo’er!”
