English (for the teacher)
On New Year’s Day, I say to my Chinese friend Jianhua, “Happy new year!”
Jianhua says, “Thanks! Our Chinese new year isn’t here yet.”
Tomorrow is Spring Festival. Jianhua invites me to his home for dinner.
The moment I walk in, I say, “Happy new year!” Grandma smiles and says, “Happy new year! Sit down, sit down!”
Jianhua tells me, “Over the holiday, you can say ‘xīnnián kuàilè’, and you can say ‘guònián hǎo’ too.”
In the evening, Jianhua’s grandparents and parents are all at home. We sit down to dinner together. There are lots of dishes on the table, and dumplings too. Jianhua says, “For us northerners, this is the night for dumplings.”
After dinner, nobody goes to bed. We watch TV together and wait for midnight.
At eleven, I really want to sleep. Jianhua says, “You can’t sleep! Tonight we stay up late.”
Midnight comes! The whole family says, “Happy new year!”
I say it too: “Happy new year! Can I go to sleep now?”
