English (for the teacher)
You’ve just come out of the metro station, and the office is still a kilometre away. You check your phone: it’s nearly eight. It’s a bit far to walk, and too close for a taxi. Then you notice lots of bikes by the road: yellow ones, blue ones, green ones.
These are shared bikes. You see them all over China.
The yellow ones are Meituan’s, the blue ones are Hellobike’s, and the green ones are Qingju’s. They aren’t yours, but anyone can ride them.
So how do you ride one? It’s easy, just three steps: scan, ride, park.
Step one: scan. Open Alipay or WeChat on your phone, find the bike’s mini program, and scan the QR code on the bike. The lock opens, and you can ride.
Step two: ride. Go wherever you like. A few yuan is usually enough for half an hour, much cheaper than a taxi.
Step three: park. This step matters most. The map on your phone shows you where you’re allowed to park.
When you get there, close the bike’s lock and tap “End ride” on your phone. Your phone pays by itself.
There are two things to remember. If you park in the wrong place, you may have to pay extra. If you forget to end the ride, your phone keeps counting the time, and the money keeps going up.
So next time you come out of the metro, don’t call a taxi just yet. Scan the code, get on, and enjoy the breeze on the way.
