English (for the teacher)

Grandpa Gao has a friend. In three years, they have never said a word to each other.

Every morning at eight, the two of them play chess in the park. At ten, they stand up, nod, and go home.

Then one morning, his friend doesn’t come.

Grandpa Gao sits there alone and waits all morning.

The next day, his friend doesn’t come either. On the third day, he still doesn’t come.

Grandpa Gao wants to find him. But he doesn’t have his friend’s number, he doesn’t know where he lives, and he doesn’t even know his name.

On the fourth day, a little girl comes.

“Grandpa, are you my grandpa’s friend? My grandpa is ill. He’s in hospital. He says he’d like to play chess with you.”

Grandpa Gao stands up at once: “Let’s go!”

In the hospital, the two old men play chess all morning.

At last, Grandpa Gao speaks: “What’s your name?”

His friend laughs: “Three years, and you’re only asking now?”
