English (for the teacher)
Xiao Li had been working in Beijing for less than a month. He lived on the sixth floor of an old housing estate, and downstairs there was a small restaurant.
The restaurant wasn’t big; it only had room for five tables. It was run by Grandma Liu, in her sixties, who talked fast and laughed loudly.
Every day after work, Xiao Li came here for a bowl of noodles. He wasn’t much of a cook, and he didn’t want to eat alone in his room.
On the first day, he ordered a bowl of beef noodles. The noodles came, and there was an egg in them. He thought: “Maybe all the noodles here come with an egg.”
On the second day, he ordered a bowl of egg noodles. The noodles came, and there were two eggs in them.
On the third day, he ordered the cheapest noodles, the kind with just a few vegetables. The noodles came, and there was still an egg in them.
Xiao Li looked at the table next to him. In other people’s bowls there were only noodles and vegetables.
He carried his bowl over: “Grandma, is there a mistake? I didn’t order an egg.”
Grandma Liu looked at him, then at the bowl: “No mistake. Eat up, the noodles are getting cold.”
“Then let me pay you for the egg.”
“No need, no need.” With that, Grandma Liu went back to making noodles.
Xiao Li sat back down at his table, looked at the egg and thought for a long time. He didn’t know Grandma Liu, and Grandma Liu didn’t know him. So why the egg?
