Phone scams in China: how to spot them

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

“Hello, this is the police. There’s a problem with your bank card, and we need to check it now. Please first transfer your money to a safe account.”

If you get a call like this, hang up at once. It is one of scammers’ favourite tricks: first make you scared, then get you to transfer money.

Another common kind of scammer says online, “Work from home and earn a few hundred kuai a day!” All you have to do is buy things for shops and say they’re great, and you get paid. But after you’ve done it a few times, they ask you to pay first, and then they disappear.

One thing to remember: real police don’t ask you to move money into a “safe account”.

Now many Chinese people have an app on their phones called the National Anti-Fraud Center. It can tell you which calls might be from scammers. And if you get a call from 96110, be sure to answer: it’s the police calling to warn you about scammers.
