English (for the teacher)
A week later, there were very few people in the restaurant one evening. Xiao Li finished his noodles but didn’t leave straight away. He saw a photo on the wall.
In the photo was a young man sitting in the restaurant doorway with a bowl of noodles in his hands, smiling happily.
“Who’s this?” Xiao Li asked.
“My grandson.” Grandma Liu came over and sat down across from him. “He’s studying abroad; he hasn’t been back for three years.”
Looking at the photo, she said: “When he was little, he loved eggs most of all. Every time he had noodles, he’d eat the egg first, then take his time with the noodles.”
Xiao Li looked at his own bowl. Half the noodles were still there, but the egg was already gone.
“I saw it the first day you came in.” Grandma Liu laughed. “You eat noodles just like him.”
Xiao Li didn’t know what to say. After a while, he asked: “Grandma, do you call him often?”
“I do. He’s busy, I’m busy; we say a couple of things and that’s it.”
That evening, Xiao Li went back to his room and called his own mum. They talked for a long time, from work to the weather, and from the weather to the little dog at home.
At the end, his mum asked: “Are you eating well every day?”
Xiao Li said: “Very well. There’s a grandma downstairs who gives me an extra egg every day.”
