Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

Now, master and disciple came to Gao Village as night was falling, and ran right into a young man hurrying out. Wukong grabbed him and asked where he was going. He turned out to be a servant of the Gao family in the village, sent out on his master's orders to find someone to catch a demon. Wukong laughed: "You're in luck: catching demons is my trade!"

Old Mr Gao invited them into his house and poured out his troubles: "I have three daughters, and three years ago I took a husband for the youngest, Cuilan. He said he came from Fuling Mountain and his surname was Zhu — Pig. At first he was hard-working: he ploughed without an ox and harvested without a sickle, and the whole family liked him. But then his looks changed: a long snout, big ears and a ridge of bristles down the back of his head, just like a pig. He eats an enormous amount too: three to five pecks of rice at a sitting, and a hundred-odd flatbreads just for breakfast. Worse still, he can ride the clouds, and he can send sand flying and rocks rolling, and he's locked Cuilan in the back courtyard, and we haven't seen her for half a year!" Wukong said: "That's no trouble at all. I'll catch him for you tonight."

When night came, Wukong first rescued Cuilan and brought her back to her father, then with a shake of his body he turned into her very image and sat waiting in her room. Before long, a gust of wild wind swept past and the monster arrived: sure enough, a pig spirit with a long snout and big ears. Wukong lay on the bed sighing and moaning on purpose and paid him no attention. The monster asked: "Sweetheart, why are you unhappy today?" Wukong sighed: "My parents can't stand how ugly you are, and they're going to get someone to catch you." The monster laughed: "Don't worry; I have thirty-six transformations and a nine-toothed rake, so why should I fear any monk or Taoist? I live in the Cloud Path Cave on Fuling Mountain and my name is Zhu Ganglie, and even if they find out, what can they do to me?" Wukong said: "They say they're going to ask the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who wrecked heaven five hundred years ago." The moment the monster heard this, he jumped with fright: "In that case, I'd better go; this marriage is over!"

He was just going out of the door when Wukong grabbed him, showed his real form and shouted: "You monster, where do you think you're going? Take a good look at who I am!" The monster turned and saw a hairy face and a thunder god's beak; he went weak at the knees with fright, wriggled out of his clothes, turned into a wild wind and fled. Remembering where the monster had just said he lived, Wukong chased hard after him, all the way to the Cloud Path Cave on Fuling Mountain.

The monster raised his nine-toothed rake and fought Wukong, telling his story as he fought: "I was once Marshal Tianpeng of the River of Heaven, but because I got drunk and flirted with the Moon Goddess Chang'e, the Jade Emperor had me flogged two thousand times and banished me to the world below. But when I was reborn I took the wrong road and ended up in the belly of a sow, and that's how I came to look like this!" The two of them fought from night till dawn, and neither could win.

Wukong cursed: "You monster, I'm guarding the Tang Monk from the East on his way to fetch the scriptures from the West!" At these words the monster threw his rake to the ground with a clang and asked: "Where is the pilgrim? Please take me to see him. The bodhisattva Guanyin told me to keep a meatless diet and pray to the Buddha and wait for him here, and I've been waiting for years!" With that, he set fire to the Cloud Path Cave, followed Wukong back to Gao Village, knelt before the Tang Monk and took him as his master.

The monster said: "The bodhisattva has already given me a religious name: Zhu Wuneng." The Tang Monk said: "Good, good! Since you don't eat meat or strong-smelling food, I'll give you another name as well: Bajie, Eight Prohibitions." From then on, he was called Zhu Bajie: Pigsy.

As they were leaving, Bajie bowed and said to old Mr Gao: "Father-in-law, take good care of my wife. If we don't manage to get the scriptures, I'll come back and be your son-in-law again just as before." Wukong shouted: "Idiot, stop talking nonsense!" Everyone laughed.

Now the Tang Monk had two disciples. But ahead lay the widest river of all, and in it lived a monster with skulls hanging around his neck…
