The Black Bear Demon
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
Sun Wukong came to Black Wind Mountain. Hiding in the grass, he heard the Black Bear Demon talking with his friends. The Black Bear Demon said: "Last night I got hold of a treasure, a robe. In a few days it's my birthday. I'm going to invite everyone to a 'Buddha Robe Party' so we can all admire it!"
Sun Wukong jumped out and shouted: "You wicked bear, give me back my cassock!" The Black Bear Demon picked up a long black spear and they began to fight. They fought from morning till noon, and neither could beat the other. The Black Bear Demon said: "I'm hungry. I'll be back after lunch!" With that he went back into his cave and shut the door.
The next day they fought again, and still neither could win. Sun Wukong thought: "This won't do. I have to go to Guanyin. Guanyin Temple is her temple; she can't just stay out of this!"
He flew to the South Sea and found Guanyin. Guanyin said: "You monkey! If you hadn't shown off your treasure, would any of this have happened?" Sun Wukong grinned sheepishly. But Guanyin still went with him to Black Wind Mountain.
On the road below the mountain they saw a man carrying a plate, and on the plate were two magic pills. Sun Wukong raised his golden-hooped staff and killed him with one blow. When he died, he turned into a big grey wolf. He was the Black Bear Demon's friend Lingxuzi, on his way to bring the Black Bear Demon a birthday present.
Sun Wukong thought for a moment and had an idea: "Bodhisattva, you turn into this Lingxuzi, and I'll turn into a pill, a little bigger than the other one. You give me to the Black Bear Demon, he eats me, and I fight him from inside his stomach!" Guanyin said: "A good plan."
Guanyin turned into Lingxuzi and, carrying the plate, walked into the Black Bear Demon's cave. The Black Bear Demon was delighted: "My friend, you've come!" "Lingxuzi" said: "Here's my birthday present for you. Please, eat." She gave the Black Bear Demon the bigger one.
The moment the Black Bear Demon lifted it to his lips, it rolled down into his stomach by itself. Sun Wukong punched and kicked inside, and the Black Bear Demon writhed on the ground, howling: "It hurts! It's killing me!"
Guanyin turned back into herself and said: "Bring out the cassock, now!" The Black Bear Demon said at once: "I'll give it back! I'll give it back!" Only then did Sun Wukong jump out through his nose.
The Black Bear Demon still wanted to fight, so Guanyin took out a gold band, put it on his head and said a few words. His head hurt so much that he had to kneel down. Guanyin said: "Come back to the South Sea with me and guard my mountain." The Black Bear Demon nodded and followed Guanyin away.
Sun Wukong took the cassock and went happily back to the Tang Monk. When the Tang Monk saw the cassock, he was overjoyed too.
The two of them headed west again. A few days later they came to a place called Gao Village. There an old man was searching everywhere for someone to get rid of his daughter's husband. His daughter's husband was a pig.
