The Black Bear Demon
Name: ________________ Date: ________

In one somersault Wukong reached Black Wind Mountain. He was looking for the way through the mountain when he heard several people sitting on the grass, talking. A black-faced fellow was laughing: "Last night I got hold of a Buddha's robe. It's a really fine thing! The day after tomorrow is my birthday. I'm going to invite all my friends and hold a 'Buddha's Robe Party'." When Wukong heard that, he leapt out and shouted: "So it was you who stole my cassock! Give it back!" He raised his golden-hooped staff and killed a man in white beside them, who turned out to be a white-spotted snake in disguise. The black fellow and a Taoist with him fled in terror.
Wukong chased them to the mouth of a cave, and the Black Bear Demon came out with a long spear and fought him. They fought from the cave mouth to the top of the mountain, more than ten rounds, and still neither got the upper hand. At noon the Black Bear Demon said: "Wait till I've had my lunch, then I'll fight you again!" With that he ran back into his cave and shut the great door. Wukong stood outside cursing for ages, but the demon simply wouldn't come out. The next day the two of them fought all day long again, and still neither could beat the other.
Wukong thought: "This demon is no weakling. Guanyin Temple is Guanyin's place, so I'd better go to her about this." He flew to the South Sea and found Guanyin. Guanyin said angrily: "You monkey! You showed off the cassock, burned down my temple, and now you have the nerve to come to me!" Wukong hurried to say all sorts of nice things, and only then did Guanyin agree to go to Black Wind Mountain with him.
Halfway there, they happened to meet the Taoist who had fled. He held a glass plate with two magic pills on it, and was on his way to give them to the Black Bear Demon as a birthday present. Wukong raised his rod and killed him, and he showed his true form: a grey wolf named Lingxuzi.
Wukong looked at the pills and smiled: "Bodhisattva, I've got a good idea. You turn into this Lingxuzi, and I'll turn into a pill, a bit bigger than that one. You give me to the demon to eat, and once I'm in his stomach, the rest is easy!" Guanyin nodded, and at once she looked exactly like Lingxuzi.
They came to the cave mouth, and the Black Bear Demon came out happily to greet them: "Lingxuzi, you're here, wonderful!" Guanyin held up the plate and said: "This is my birthday present for Your Majesty. Please, Your Majesty, eat one." The Black Bear Demon picked up the bigger one, and the moment he put it to his lips, the pill rolled down his throat all by itself.
As soon as Wukong was in his stomach, he started punching, kicking and turning somersaults. The Black Bear Demon rolled about on the ground in pain, yelling: "Mercy! Mercy!" Guanyin changed back into her own form and said: "Hand over the cassock, now!" The Black Bear Demon hurriedly had the cassock brought out. Only then did Wukong squeeze out through his nose.
The Black Bear Demon still wanted to fight, so Guanyin threw a golden hoop onto his head and began to recite the spell. His head hurt so much he couldn't stand it, and he had to kneel down and beg for mercy. So Guanyin made him the mountain guardian of her island in the South Sea. She said to Wukong: "Go back and take good care of your master, and don't make any more trouble for him." With that she went back to the South Sea, taking the Black Bear Demon with her. Holding the cassock in both hands, Wukong somersaulted back to the Tang Monk's side.
The cassock was back, the Tang Monk was overjoyed, and master and disciple set off west again. A few days later they came to a village called Gao Village. There an old man was desperately looking for someone to get rid of his son-in-law — a pig.
