The neighbour who hates cats
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
Auntie Qian lived on the second floor of Building 3. Everyone in the compound knew she hated Tofu more than anything.
“That cat? Don’t talk to me about that cat! The moment it turns up, I start sneezing.” And with that, she sneezed.
Lele glanced into the kitchen. On the table was a small cooked fish, with nothing on it at all. Next to it sat a little bowl with a white cat painted on it.
“Auntie, don’t you put salt on your fish?”
“I… I’m on a diet.”
Grandpa looked at the little bowl and said nothing. She went quiet too. After a while, she sat down.
“When I was little, we had three cats at home. Later, I started sneezing whenever I touched a cat, so I couldn’t keep one.”
So that was it: every day at noon, she secretly fed Tofu a small fish downstairs. She called it “Sweetie”.
Lele asked, “Then why do you say you hate it?”
“I’ve been badmouthing it for three years. How can I say I like it now?”
Grandpa asked, “On Sunday at noon, did Sweetie come?”
“It came. But it ate very slowly, and afterwards it lay in the sun for a long time.”
Then Auntie Qian added, “Oh, and go and ask Yangyang on the ground floor. He hasn’t got a cat, but I saw him buy a huge box of cat food!”
