English (for the teacher)
Last night, Zou Yeye said he had not bought the seventh-floor parcels. Just then, Mr Luo called: another seventh-floor parcel had come, and this time it had a phone number on it.
As soon as she heard this, Qiao An ran downstairs. Zou Yeye did not follow.
The lights in the parcel station were already on. Mr Luo put a small box on Zou Nainai's desk. The box was a little dirty, and on it were the same few words as always: 'Building Six, seventh floor.' But this time, below them, there was a phone number.
Mr Luo said, 'All these times they've come, and this is the first time there's a phone number.'
The door flew open and Ningning ran in. 'I saw Mr Luo's van from home! Is it a seventh-floor one?'
Qiao An looked at the number, her heart beating fast. 'Let me try.' She turned her phone's volume all the way up so the two of them could hear too.
The phone rang for a long time. Ningning didn't move at all, and Mr Luo said nothing. At last, someone picked up. It was a young woman's voice: 'Hello?'
'Hello, I'm from the parcel station in the compound. We have a parcel here, addressed to Building Six, seventh floor…'
The other end went quiet all at once. After a long time, the woman said, 'You have the wrong number.'
'But the number is written right on…'
There was no sound on the line any more. Qiao An tried again; the phone rang for a long time, but no one ever picked up.
Ningning was not happy: 'Wrong number? Isn't the number right there on it?'
Mr Luo said, 'Maybe someone wrote it down wrong.'
Qiao An thought for a moment and said, 'I don't believe it. If it really were a wrong number, she should have asked me, "How can Building Six have a seventh floor?" On my first day, I thought it was a mistake too. But she didn't ask anything.'
Ningning's eyes lit up: 'She knows about the seventh floor!'
'Yes. As soon as I said "seventh floor", she went silent for a long time.'
Qiao An thought of Zou Yeye again. Just now, when she asked whether anyone in his family was in Guangzhou, his face had suddenly gone white.
Ningning kept looking at the box. He picked it up, looked at one side, then the other, and then suddenly went still.
'Look here! Under the phone number, there's one more tiny character. Half of it is gone, but I think I know it.'
