English (for the teacher)
Last night, for the first time, a seventh-floor parcel had a phone number on it. Qiao An called the number, and a young woman said only "You've got the wrong number," then never answered again. Just then, Ningning noticed a tiny character on the delivery slip.
The character sat right under the phone number. Its left side was still there, but the right side was gone.
Mr Luo took a look and said, "It's too small, I can't make it out."
Ningning carried the box over to the light and looked at it for a long time. He didn't say anything, just like a police officer on TV.
After a while, he ran over to the old desk and opened the bottom drawer.
Qiao An asked, "What are you looking for?"
"I've seen this character somewhere. I know! It's in here!"
He took out the old notebook. The notebook had gone a little yellow, and on it were a few big characters: "Zou Family Little Shop".
Ningning put the notebook next to the box. "Look at the first character. Isn't its left side the same as the half on the box?"
Qiao An looked carefully, again and again. They really were the same.
She said slowly, "That's the character Zou."
Ningning shouted, "Zou, as in Grandma Zou! And Zou, as in Grandpa Zou!"
Suddenly everyone went quiet. Qiao An's heart was racing again.
She said, "Whoever sends these parcels is named Zou, and is right there in Guangzhou."
Mr Luo thought for a moment: "I've delivered parcels in this compound for so many years, and the only family named Zou is Grandpa Zou's."
Ningning said, "I'm right again! You owe me another loaf of bread."
Qiao An laughed: "OK, little policeman, let's find this person first."
But when she thought of Grandpa Zou, she felt a little sad. Just now on the seventh floor, she had asked him whether anyone in his family was in Guangzhou. For a long time he said nothing, and in the end he said just one word: "No."
Why wouldn't he tell her?
Just then, someone knocked on the door: three slow knocks.
Ningning ran over and opened the door. Grandpa Zou was standing outside.
He didn't come in; his eyes stayed on the box on the desk. After a long time, he asked quietly, "The name on the delivery slip... whose is it?"
