The Seventh Floor, Episode 17: The Second Chair
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
Yesterday Mr Luo said a big seventh-floor parcel would arrive today, sent from Guangzhou. Zou Yeye said he would come for it himself, and in the daytime.
Today was Saturday. At eight in the morning, Mr Luo's van had only just reached the door, and Zou Yeye was already waiting inside the parcel station. He was wearing a clean shirt, and he had washed his hair too.
The parcel really was big, taller than Ningning. It was hard for Mr Luo to carry it on his own, so Qiao An hurried over to help him.
The door was suddenly pushed open: it was Ningning. He had come on his bike today, and the moment he walked in he shouted, "What a huge parcel!"
On the box were the same few words as always: "Building Six, seventh floor." No name, and no phone number.
Zou Yeye said, "Open it right here. You've all helped me, so you should see it too."
He slowly opened the box. Inside was a green chair, very new.
Ningning was a little disappointed: "Just a chair? I thought it would be loads and loads of seeds."
But as soon as Qiao An saw it, she thought of the little room on the seventh floor. There was a chair just like this one in there, only that one was very old.
Zou Yeye looked at the chair and said nothing for a long time. At last he said, "There used to be two chairs like this on the seventh floor. One was my granddaughter's, and one was her grandma's. The two of them would sit among the flowers, and once they sat down they'd stay all afternoon."
Ningning asked, "So where's your granddaughter's chair?"
"After she went to Guangzhou, that chair broke, and I never bought another." Zou Yeye paused, then said, "After all these years, she still remembers. She remembers the seventh floor, and those two chairs, very clearly."
Ningning thought for a moment, and his eyes lit up: "Grandpa, I get it! The old one is yours, and the new one is hers. She wants to come back and sit with you on the seventh floor!"
Zou Yeye didn't answer. He put his hand on the new chair and didn't move for a long time. Qiao An saw that his eyes had gone red again.
In the afternoon, Qiao An and Mr Luo helped him carry the chair up to the seventh floor. The two chairs stood side by side, one old, one new. In front of them were the five pots with their little green leaves.
That evening, back home, Qiao An checked the weather on her phone: strong wind tonight, and heavy rain.
She went to the window. The wind outside had grown stronger, and all the trees below were swaying. She thought of those tiny green leaves on the seventh floor.
Just then her phone rang. It was Ningning: "It's started raining! What about the flowers on the seventh floor?"
