The Seventh Floor, Episode 3: The Locked Iron Door

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

Yesterday morning, a dry leaf turned up on Qiao An's desk. Ningning said there was a door at the very top of Building Six, and he had never seen it open.

But after school yesterday, Ningning didn't come. His mum said he had to stay home and do his homework.

At five this afternoon, the parcel station door suddenly flew open. It was Ningning, and before he had even put down his schoolbag he shouted: "Homework's done! Let's go, to Building Six!"

Building Six has no lift, so they climbed up floor by floor. A few bikes stood on the first floor, and on the second someone was cooking, and it smelled good. By the third, fourth and fifth floors, the building was getting quieter and quieter.

On the sixth floor, Ningning stopped and said, "This is it."

The stairs only went as far as the sixth floor. Beside them was a small iron door with a big lock on it.

Qiao An went over and pushed the iron door, but it didn't move. Then she pulled at the lock, but it wouldn't open either.

"Told you," said Ningning. "There's no way up."

Qiao An looked at the iron door. It was old and dirty, as if no one had opened it for years. But the lock was different: it was new, and clean.

"Ningning, look. The door is so old, so why is the lock so new?"

Ningning thought for a moment, and his eyes lit up: "Because someone uses it a lot!"

Qiao An put her ear to the iron door and listened. There seemed to be a faint sound inside. Was it the wind? Or was something moving?

Just then, behind them, a door on the sixth floor opened.

An elderly voice asked, "You two, what are you doing here?"
