The Tightening Spell
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
The six men stood in the middle of the road and shouted: "Monk, stop right there! Leave the horse and all your things, and we'll let you pass!" The Tang Monk was so frightened he fell off his horse.
Sun Wukong walked over smiling and said: "All right. But first give me a share of the money you've taken from other people!" The six men were furious and hacked at his head with their knives, seventy or eighty times in all. But Sun Wukong wasn't hurt at all.
Sun Wukong said: "Had enough? Now it's my turn!" He took out his golden-hooped staff, one blow each, and all six men were dead.
The Tang Monk was angry: "How could you kill people? They were bad men, but you still can't kill them! We mustn't even kill a little insect." He went on and on, and wouldn't stop.
Sun Wukong couldn't stand being nagged. He said: "If you think I can't be a monk and can't get to the Western Paradise, then I'm leaving!" One somersault, and he was gone. The Tang Monk had no choice but to walk on slowly by himself.
Sun Wukong flew to the East Sea to see the Dragon King of the East Sea. The Dragon King gave him tea. Sun Wukong saw a painting on the wall: an old man sitting on a bridge threw his shoe off it, and a young man went to fetch it for him.
The Dragon King said: "That young man is Zhang Liang. Three times the old man threw his shoe off the bridge, and three times Zhang Liang fetched it, without getting angry at all. In the end the old man gave him a book, and later Zhang Liang did great things. Great Sage, if you don't go west with the Tang Monk and do as you're told, you'll only ever be a demon." Sun Wukong thought for a long time, then said: "All right, I'll go back!"
Meanwhile, on the road, the Tang Monk met an old woman. She gave him a robe and a flowered cap and said: "When your disciple comes back, have him put it on. I'll also teach you a few words, called the Tightening Spell. When he won't listen, say it." With that, she flew up into the sky and went off to the east. It was Guanyin.
When Sun Wukong came back, the Tang Monk was sitting by the road, not saying a word. Sun Wukong said: "Master, you must be hungry. I'll get you something to eat." He opened the bag, saw a pretty flowered cap inside and asked: "What's this?" The Tang Monk said: "That's something from when I was little. If you like it, it's yours." Sun Wukong happily put it on his head.
At once the Tang Monk quietly began the Tightening Spell. Sun Wukong cried: "My head! My head!" He held his head in both hands and writhed on the ground. He tried to take the cap off, but it had already become a gold band, grown fast to his head. He hit it with his golden-hooped staff, but it wouldn't open.
When the Tang Monk stopped, the pain went away; when he started again, it came back. Sun Wukong knew Guanyin had taught it to the Tang Monk, and he was so angry he wanted to go to the South Sea and hit her. The Tang Monk said: "If she could teach it to me, she can say it herself." When Sun Wukong heard that, he didn't dare go. Sun Wukong had no choice but to kneel and say: "Master, stop! My head hurts so much! From now on I'll do as I'm told!"
After that, Sun Wukong was much better behaved. A few days later they came to a deep river. Suddenly, something huge slowly rose out of the water...
