The White Dragon Horse
Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)
This was Coiling Snake Mountain, and the river below it was called Eagle Grief Stream. The water was deep and cold, and even birds that flew here grew sad. Suddenly a huge dragon leapt out of the water, opened its great mouth and came at the Tang Monk. Sun Wukong pulled the Tang Monk off the horse at once and took him up the mountain. When they looked back, the white horse was gone. The dragon had eaten it, and everything on its back too!
The Tang Monk cried: "Without a horse, how will I get to the Western Paradise?" Sun Wukong said: "Don't cry. I'll go and make it give the horse back!"
He stood on the bank and shouted: "You wretch, come out and give me back my horse!" The dragon leapt out of the water and fought him for a long time. It couldn't beat Sun Wukong, so it went back into the water and wouldn't come out however much he shouted. Sun Wukong could do nothing in the water, and could only fret on the bank.
Sun Wukong called up the local mountain god. The mountain god said: "Guanyin put it here, to wait for the one going to the Western Paradise. For this, you'll have to ask Guanyin to come." Someone went to the South Sea at once and brought Guanyin back.
As soon as Sun Wukong saw Guanyin, he said angrily: "You put this gold band on my head, and every time Master says the spell my head hurts! And now you've put that thing here to eat our horse!"
Guanyin laughed: "You monkey! Without the gold band, who could ever control you? That is the third son of the Dragon King of the West Sea. He did something very wrong and nearly died; I helped him and had him wait here for the one going to the Western Paradise, to be the Tang Monk's horse. Did you ask him? Did you tell him you were going to the Western Paradise?" Sun Wukong said: "No... I just started fighting as soon as I saw him."
Guanyin went to the bank and called: "Little White Dragon, come out, Guanyin is here!" The little white dragon came straight out of the water, turned into a young man and bowed: "Bodhisattva, I've waited here a long time, but no one ever said the word 'scriptures'."
Guanyin took the pearl from under his chin, dipped a willow twig in the water from her vase, sprinkled it on him and said: "Change!" The little white dragon turned into a white horse, just like the old one. Guanyin said: "Carry the Tang Monk to the Western Paradise, and one day you'll become good too." The White Dragon Horse nodded.
Sun Wukong said to Guanyin: "The road to the Western Paradise is too hard. I'm not going!" Guanyin said: "Don't be afraid. If you ever run into real trouble, I'll come and help you." She took three leaves, turned them into three hairs, set them on the back of Sun Wukong's head and said: "These will help you when things are at their worst."
The Tang Monk mounted the White Dragon Horse and crossed the river. An old man gave him a saddle, and then vanished. It turned out Guanyin had sent this too. Now he had a horse, a disciple and a cassock worth more than a kingdom. But that cassock would soon bring a great fire.
