Under the Five-Element Mountain

Name: ________________ Date: ________

Sun Wukong was wreaking havoc in heaven, fighting this way and that, and nobody could beat him. The Jade Emperor didn't know what to do, so he asked the Buddha from the Western Paradise to come and help.

The Buddha smiled and asked: "Why are you hitting people in the Heavenly Palace?" Sun Wukong said loudly: "That chair the Jade Emperor sits in should be mine! I know the Seventy-Two Changes, and I have my Somersault Cloud: one somersault and I can fly a hundred and eight thousand li. I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and nobody can compare with me!"

The Buddha said: "Fine, let's have a contest. Stand on my right hand, and if you can jump out of my palm, heaven is yours. If you can't jump out, you go back to your Flower Fruit Mountain and study for a few thousand more years."

Sun Wukong thought: "What a fool this man is! His hand is so small, it's smaller than a table. I can fly out of it in one go!" He jumped onto the Buddha's right hand and shouted: "I'm off!" He turned a somersault and was gone in an instant.

He flew and flew for a long, long time, until he saw five pink pillars ahead of him, so tall that they reached all the way up into the sky. He thought: "This must be the very edge of the world. I'd better write something here, so people will believe me when I get back." He turned one of his hairs into a brush and wrote eight big characters on the middle pillar: "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven was here." When he finished writing, he thought for a moment, and then he peed at the foot of the first pillar. He laughed and said: "There, now nobody can say I never came!"

He turned another somersault, flew back, stood on the Buddha's hand and said loudly: "I've already been to the very edge of the world, and I wrote my name there too. Hurry up and give me heaven!"

The Buddha said: "You monkey, you've been on my hand the whole time and haven't gone anywhere!" Sun Wukong said: "Impossible! If you don't believe me, come with me and see!" The Buddha said: "No need to go. Just look at my hand."

Sun Wukong looked, and on the middle finger of the Buddha's right hand were eight small characters: "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven was here." And at the base of the thumb, you could still smell monkey pee. So the five pillars had been the Buddha's five fingers all along! Sun Wukong got a huge fright: "How can this be? I don't believe it, I'm going to look again!"

Just as he was about to jump up, the Buddha flipped his right hand over and pushed Sun Wukong out. The five fingers turned into five big mountains joined together, called the Five-Element Mountain, and in an instant they pinned Sun Wukong underneath.

Sun Wukong's head was still outside, but no matter how he tried, he couldn't get out. He shouted: "Let me out! Let me out!" Then the Buddha took out a piece of paper with six characters written on it and stuck it on the mountain. Now the mountain didn't move at all, and Sun Wukong could never get out.

When the Buddha went back to the Western Paradise, he said to the gods on the mountain: "When he's hungry, give him iron pellets to eat; when he's thirsty, give him melted copper to drink."

And so Sun Wukong lay pinned under the Five-Element Mountain and waited and waited: one year, ten years, a hundred years... Five hundred years in all. Spring rain fell, winter snow fell, and every day all he could do was look at the sky; he could never fly again.

He didn't know yet that one day a monk coming from the east would pass by this mountain on his way to the West. And then the Great Sage's new story would only be beginning.
