What are the four gentlemen in Chinese painting?

梅花 (méihuā, plum blossom), 兰花 (lánhuā, orchid), 竹子 (zhúzi, bamboo) and 菊花 (júhuā, chrysanthemum), painted together as 梅兰竹菊 (méi lán zhú jú). Pine, bamboo and plum are also 岁寒三友 (suìhánsānyǒu, three friends of winter), because they stay green or bloom in the cold.

What does the lotus mean in Chinese culture?

Purity: the lotus grows from mud yet stays clean, which is the saying 出淤泥而不染 (chūyūníérbùrǎn, to emerge unsullied from the mud). 荷花 (héhuā) and 莲花 (liánhuā) are both lotus.

Which flower means love in Chinese?

玫瑰 (méigui, rose) is the flower of romance, as in English. Peach blossom stands for it too: 桃花运 (táohuāyùn, luck in love) is luck in love.
